If you're outside the UK and want to watch Doctor Who, you might not need a VPN at all. Thanks to the BBC's deal with Disney+, recent series are available in many countries already. This guide helps you work out which route applies to you, and covers the full iPlayer setup for when you do need a VPN.
Before you set up a VPN, check Disney+ first
Doctor Who is one of the few British shows with genuine international streaming coverage. Since the BBC's deal with Disney+, new series have been available on Disney+ in many countries outside the UK, often on the same day they air in Britain. If you already subscribe to Disney+ and you're in the US, Canada, Australia, or most of Europe, open Disney+ now and search for Doctor Who. There's a good chance it's already there and you don't need to do anything else.
iPlayer is still worth knowing about: it carries the full modern run, some specials that don't make it to Disney+, and is free to use with a BBC account. For most people who just want the current series, Disney+ is the simpler starting point.
Which series are on Disney+?
The series from 2023 onwards (the Ncuti Gatwa era, starting with the 60th anniversary specials) are available on Disney+ in many countries outside the UK. Earlier modern series, the Russell T Davies revival from 2005, the Matt Smith era, and the Capaldi and Whittaker runs, have varying availability depending on your country. BBC iPlayer has a more complete modern library if you want everything in one place.
Classic Doctor Who (1963 to 1989) isn't on Disney+. A large selection of classic stories is available on BritBox UK, which you can access with a UK VPN server.
How to watch Doctor Who on BBC iPlayer abroad
If you don't have Disney+, or you want access to series that aren't available on it in your country, BBC iPlayer is free and has the complete modern run. The thing to know is that iPlayer uses stronger geo-blocking than most UK streaming services, so the setup takes a few more steps than usual.
What you need for iPlayer
- A BBC account registered to a UK postcode. iPlayer requires a free BBC account to watch anything. When registering, enter a valid UK postcode. You'll also be asked to confirm you hold a valid UK TV licence.
- A VPN with reliable UK servers. NordVPN and ExpressVPN are the most consistent performers with iPlayer in our testing. Free VPNs almost never get through.
Getting Doctor Who on iPlayer: step by step
- Connect your VPN to a UK server before opening your browser. Opening iPlayer without a VPN active first lets it log your real location for that session.
- Open a private or incognito window. Cookies from previous sessions can reveal your real location even when your IP now shows a UK address.
- Block WebRTC in your browser. WebRTC is a browser feature that can reveal your real IP address to websites even with a VPN running, and iPlayer checks for it. In Chrome, install uBlock Origin, open its dashboard, and tick "Prevent WebRTC from leaking local IP addresses" in the Privacy section. In Firefox, go to about:config and set
media.peerconnection.enabledto false. Safari is more restrictive about WebRTC by default, so you're less likely to need this step there. - Go to bbc.co.uk/iplayer and sign in.
- If it blocks you, switch to a different UK server. London is the most frequently blocked. Try Manchester or Edinburgh instead.
Watching on the iPlayer app and smart TVs
The iPlayer app on iPhone and Android often works better with a VPN than the browser version, because the app doesn't rely on WebRTC. Make sure you're using the full VPN app rather than a browser extension: a browser extension only covers the browser, not the iPlayer app running separately. Connect your VPN first, then open the app.
The app also supports offline downloads. Connect your VPN, find the episode, and tap the download icon. Downloaded episodes play without an active VPN connection since they're stored on your device.
Amazon Fire TV Stick: the most straightforward smart TV option. The iPlayer app is available directly from Amazon's app store. Install your VPN from the same store, connect to a UK server, and open iPlayer.
Samsung and LG smart TVs: iPlayer has a native app on both platforms. These TVs don't support VPN apps directly, so set up the VPN on your router to cover every device on your network, or share a VPN connection from your laptop as a wi-fi hotspot and connect the TV to it.
Apple TV: some VPN providers, including NordVPN and ExpressVPN, have tvOS apps in the Apple TV App Store. Check there first. If your VPN doesn't have one, the router or hotspot method works just as well.
